2022.01.23 10:17 100limes Surprise: increasing minimum wage does NOT bankrupt the economy. A closer look at Germany.

Hi!
I'm from Germany and reading all your posts about personal experiences or anecdotes about The Great Resignation is inspiring to me. I've never before had the impression that there could be such a thing as a workers' movement in the US, since all your socialist/pro-union/anarchist workers' movements been slowly eroded over the decades. So: Fuck yeah, you all rule! :)
One thing that keeps popping up in threads on this sub is that the US federal minimum wage hasn't been increasing since 2009, leading to a number of states and employers essentially not providing liveable wages for anyone. Of course, the two top arguments for maintaining the status quo are

I want to use my native Germany as an example of just how delusional the latter argument is, because during the odd decade of my being an adult these events took place:
And yet Germany continues to be the world's sixth-largest economy. No CEOs have thrown themselves off buildings, capitalism didn't collapse, people haven't stopped working or deliberately sought out minimum wage jobs and prices for goods and services haven't dramatically increased* ... all in all, it seems to work out alright. I've seen some discussion of this development on this sub, but I'd like to share the story again to increase visibility and hopefully pass on some optimism and hope that y'all can demand better wages :)
*well, they have - inflation in the last year alone is around 6% probably, but that appears to be due to the 'rona, increased energy prices, "labor shortages" as people switched from hospitality careers to less stressful ones and increases in VAT etc.
So, if you want the short version, there you have it: increasing the minimum wage does not end the world. For those of you interested in the background of how the German minimum wage came to be, I've sketched up the story below.
So why did Germany not have a minimum wage until 2015? I thought it was a social democratic republic. Well yes and no. I'm by no means a labor expert and too young to have been around when the groundwork for this tale was laid, so I'm really hoping someone more knowledgeable than me steps in here to provide the context that I might be missing. The general gist is this:
Germany used to get by fine without a general minimum wage because its labor landscape was governed by the unions and trades themselves. Meaning: if you worked at corporation that processed metals (like auto, foundries, CNC, you name it), the union and the company had drawn up a general contract specifiying which role would have to be paid at least x amount. So if you were a line worker, you didn't have to negotiate wages, because the union and the company had agreed that your job was worth X€ and that was what you got. This was done for almost every job at a company where a union represented a significant proportion of workers. In a similar fashion, many non-union jobs were regulated by the trades. This greatly increased barriers of entry - for example, you couldn't just open a hair salon, you had to go to trade school for at least 2 years and get certified. On the other hand, trade associations kept members in line and saw to it that everyone priced their goods and services in a manner that wasn't detrimental to the industry as a whole - essentially ensuring liveable wages for everyone.
At some point in the eighties, it was felt by some that this system was too rigid and inflexible and disincentivized innovation and engagement. Now, whether there actually was something to this argument is a matter of debate. Fact is: this discussion came up right around the time when Germany companies increasing outsourced manual labor to China and other countries, resulting in job losses. So, for an unassuming observer, it was easy to interpret Germany's highly regulated and expensive workforce as being the chief reason companies outsourced production to less regulated countries. This line of thinking culminated in what is now infamously known as the Agenda 2010 set in motion from 2003-2005. It was a really broad and impactful government scheme to try and modernize Germany's economy. Eventually, the changes implemented through Agenda 2010 would lead to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs, almost all of which were part of the low-wage sector and unbound by trade or union regulations, thus necessitating a "true" federal minimum wage for the first time so that people like college-aged me didn't have to exploit themselves for like 3-5€/h any longer.
What specifically did Agenda 2010 entail? Well, it eroded a lot of the things that helped create the labor market as described above:
NB: Agenda 2010 also included some nicer parts like increase education spending and childcare accessibility.
In essence, this was a radical change from the postwar decades during which Germany prospered and bloomed into an economic powerhouse where unions and workers and companies tried so actively work together (yes, this is a bit romanticized). Nevertheless, there is somewhat of a consensus that many of the reforms included in Agenda 2010 actually did help Germany to modernize and that these changes were part of why the impact of the 2008/09 financial crisis wasn't as dramatic in Germany as it would've been just a couple of years prior.
However, this comes at the cost of millions of workers who are now not unemployed, but working menial jobs for paltry wages as they have fallen out of the protections afforded by the unions and trade associations, which is why we finally got a federal minimum wage in 2015 that started at 8.5€ and again is now set to increase to 12€/h by October.
I remember vividly the mostly conservative arguments against introducing a minimum in 2015:
I could go on, but I feel like you know the anti-minimum wage talking points well enough ;)
I hope you can get something out of this story and I really hope you can find some brave senators and congresspeople to successfully legislate for an increase to the minimum wage! Stay strong!

2022.01.23 10:17 anxiouspenguin789 How to extract nook books from nook to computer??

Hi!
I have a nook BNRV300 from ~15 years ago and it contains 90 books.
I am in the UK where Barnes & Noble stopped operating many years ago. When they did they transferred the accounts to Sainsburys entertainment before they then transferred it to kobo. The only issue is that in the transfer none of my books came over. Even when I log into the kobo app it 'suggests' to me a lot of the books I used to have but they don't exist in my library. I tried solving this issue with the respective companies but got absolutely nowhere :(
I am now trying to find a way to extract all my books directly from the nooks storage its self. I plugged it into my laptop with a generic micro-usb lead I found as I have no clue where the original may be, but it doesn't go into USB mode like I hoped it would. I know it may be due to the cable not being 'nook' branded but I can't buy another one here.
I am contemplating getting an sd card and seeing if there is a way to transfer them that way but I am not sure.
I really don't want to lose or have to re-buy 90 books! If anyone could help me out I would be super super appreciative as this has been an ongoing battle of mine for many years now. Even if I can get a couple of series I would be better than none at all!!
